Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

God does certainly go to extremes with us. I'll bet 90% of Christians have some kind of "extreme" story. When I think of extremes, being a naturally somewhat pessimistic sort, I think of some of the hard times we go through and we ask, Why? What have I done? A lot of the time, the answer is, as it was with Job, "Nothing." You didn't do anything to deserve this, but God allowed it in your life to move you and/or others yet closer to Him; to develop your character as a son or daughter worthy of Him; to teach you obedience as even Jesus, who was without sin, learned obedience through the things that He suffered. So yeah--God does go to extremes--not only to draw us in, but also to grow us up. God is wild and dangerous, and good. He'll do whatever it takes to make us the people He intends us to be.

It was pretty extreme for Christ to come here and die in substitution for us. Also, don't know if this is related, but it seems extreme to me. We literally have God inside us. Sometimes we treat the Holy Spirit like an it or a thing or a conscience. He's GOD with us. That's crazy. Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble.

Timbob,
So true. One of the biggest battles out there on the streets are the religious. Many times they are the ones who like you say, want to argue doctrine all day long. Right in front of the lost. They don't seem to care. What seems most important to them is their doctrine. They are no different than the Pharisees in Jesus' time.
If the devil can get you to argue doctrine in front of the lost, I believe he is well pleased. I try not to, by the grace of God. We should ask Him to let us know if we are dealing with a "religious spirit".
Keep up the good work there in "Kalamazoo"!

Hi Richard. This is interesting in that it coinsides with some thoughts over the past couple of days. John 9:41 reads "Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth." Just as the pharissess thought themselves to "have it all figured out, many today fall into the same trap. It's important to endure sound doctrine. Unfortunately, however, some folks become so soundly indoctrinated that they can no longer hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. A person can say to themselves "I got this" and in the process cut themselves off to deeper revelation.

I ran into a guy in Kalamazoo a couple of weeks ago who was carrying a bible. At first it seemed a positive thing and I commented on the fact that he was carrying the word in that troubled part of the city. (I just figured he was out doing the same as me) I don't know his heart, but what ensued was a distraction that effectively ate up the remainder of time that I had. Instead of having a heart for the lost, he wanted to argue doctrine and even ridiculed the assortment of tracts which I was using. (I'm really careful about the tracts that I distribute. These are oftentimes "one shot deals" and we want that one shot to be substantive.)

While this man represented a particular denomination, I've seen the same pattern take place in a number of places with varying denominational leanings. It's imperative to stay before the Lord and allow him to reveal to us, things that we may not be understanding properly or areas where spiritual pride is beginning to set in.

Thanks for a thought provoking post that reflects on some ponderings that I've been having. Blessings always in Jesus name.

Cindyinsd,
Yes, love is the key. Jesus had it right. He is truth and he did fulfill the Law.
The Jews were not willing to receive Jesus and his teachings which are from The Father. They were stuck in the "Old Test". They followed Moses and they said that they were Moses disciples. It's no different today.
May the love of and for Jesus break out!
Thanks for stopping by!

I think that, more than anything, what they missed was the law of Love. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind & soul, and love your neighbor as yourself. On these hang all the law and the prophets--and they really do. It's not a law to be obeyed, well, legalistically. It's a law that means something, and the key to the law is love. Jesus is the law fulfilled.
