The Falling Away

It’s taking place today right before our eyes. If you are not aware of it, it could be that you yourself might be falling away.

What does “falling away” mean? It means falling away from your once walked in (lived in) faith. Common terms are, “backsliding” or “Apostatizing”. If we have been in the faith for any length of time, we have established a foundation in which to build upon. This foundation is founded upon faith in Christ and His teachings. Anything else is less than the truth. We “must continue in the things which we have learned” (2Tim.3:14). We must be “growing in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” (2Pet.3:18).

First off, I would like to say upfront that none of us are exempt from the possibility of falling away. “He that thinks he stands, take heed lest he falls” is good admonition for us all. We must always remember that the enemy of our souls has one thing in mind for us believers, to knock us out of our faith in Christ. He knows that if that happens, he has us for all eternity. The battle has always been for eternal souls. Yours, mine and all those in between.

Most of us have known people who have fallen away. It is pretty sobering to see them, or hear them after a period of time has passed that they have walked in this apostasy. Not only have they become different, but they pour nothing but cold water upon all their previous life with Christ. They say things like, “oh that was all just a bunch of crap”. “I was just following a bunch of lies”. “It was all just make-believe”. And the sayings go on and on.

I have known “preacher’s” who once preached Christ as the only way to God. Now they have taken up with many ways. I have known people who once walked in the “prophetic”. Now saying that it was all just a figment of the imagination. Deception runs deep.

“Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come (the day of Christ’s return) unless the falling away comes first”,….. (2Thes.2:3). There is a falling away taken place right now. People are departing from the faith in large numbers. Christ said that when He returns, “will he find faith upon the earth?” Sad to say, we are going to see many, very many, turn from the faith in the coming days.

“Now the Spirit expressly (explicitly) says, that in the latter times some will depart from the faith,” How? By “giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines (teachings) of demons,” (1Tim.4:1). Now I know it’s hard to believe that you or I could depart from the faith and follow “deceiving spirits” from Satan. But it’s true. He is the master of deception. He has ways to deceive us that we cannot even imagine. He can use the most charming people to come our way and influence us, and thereby deceive us. All in a relatively short amount of time. It might have taken us 20-30 years to get to where we are in Christ today. It could take only 6 weeks for us to be walking with demons. It’s scary, I know, but true.

“speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,” (1Tim.4:2) Here are found, two earmarks of “falling away”. Those who have, will speak lies such as, “oh, all that time of the past was times that I thought I was walking with God. Now, I know better.” Satan has got them to believe lies. Now the other earmark is the “seared conscience”. Once the conscience was tender and keen. Now, they do and say things that don’t even bother them. They go places that they would have never have gone when they were in the faith. Now, they don’t give it second thought. They are not bothered by it. They read books that they would have never thought of reading before. Now it’s no big deal. The conscience has become tough.

Another earmark of those who have fallen away is, “and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” (2Tim.4:4). No longer will the truth of Jesus stand with them. They will turn to, maybe “myths” that they once believed in or maybe it will be something totally new to them. They could dive into all kinds of teachings from all kinds of teachers, and think nothing of it. These “fables” (myths etc) are in a lot of cases, nothing more than “doctrines of demons”. If one is no longer led of the Spirit, then they are under the control of Satan, to be led where he wants them to go.

When one turns away from truth, the solid teachings of Christ, he or she “gives heed to seducing spirits”. He or she opens themselves up to all kinds of deception. They begin to criticize those who they once shared the good things of Christ with.

When we “put away holding faith and a good conscience” we make “shipwreck”. (1Tim.1:19)

“Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;”…. “a harding through the deceitfulness of sin”……. “we are partakers of Christ “IF” we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end.” (Heb.3:12-14). This race is not over until the finish line. Just because we might have went to the altar at 12yrs.old, doesn’t make us saved today. We must take heed, lest we fall away!

Understandably..we must be concerned and diligent to make our calling and election sure. However, not to be too alarmed because we can be confident that He who began the good work will complete it on that day (Philippians 1:6)
As we abide in the vine, we will have the fruit for the inspector!

  3. Richard Says:

Yes, the key is “if” we abide in the vine which is Christ…. we will complete the good work which He has prepared for us on that day. God bless you bro!

Hi Richard. I oftentimes wonder if we truly understand the danger of drifting, which, if not corrected, will lead to certain shipwreck. I was very close to shipwreck until six and a half years ago when the Lord miraculously pulled me out of my slumber. I believe that I was nearing a point of no return. Praise God for his mercy! It was an experience that i never want to repeat and there are still residual consequences that resulted from the season of rebellion.

There are also powerful lessons that came as a result of it; including the understanding of all the instances during that season when the Lord prevented me from crossing a certain point.

Something else has been on my heart as of late and it ties in with this post. There are certain saints in my area (specifically at work) who have an attitude that seems almost overly-confident. They’ll make statements to the effect of “I’m ready for the tribulation; bring it on.” It sounds almost like Peter saying that he’s ready to follow Jesus even unto death. Statements are made when none of us have been tried in this area. I fear that we oftentimes don’t grasp the seriousness of this issue, the deceptiveness of the enemy, or the persuasive power of self-preservation. Grandstanding will not suffice; we must be close to Jesus and fully persuaded that he is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Oops; I hit the “post comment” button prematurally. May we all grasp the seriousness of this issue.

    Blessings always in Jesus name

Thanks for your comment. I can certainly relate when you talk about, “residual consequences that resulted from the season of rebellion”. The “powerful lessons” are a hard but true gem.
I know what you mean about people that seem “overly-confident”. You finished up well with….Jesus! He is the Key!
    Bless you brother!

hello Richard, just stopping in to greet my brother in Christ. Yes we are deep into it now.. just how things have progressed since i started blogging 3.5 years ago. Those keeping track (“discernment ministries” etc) seem to be covered in an avalanche of overwhelming apostacy…(you can’t keep up with it anymore). I personally believe the point is that the entire thing “Christianity” was scheduled to go bad at the end and it is not just a matter of us here in “Biblical Christianity” and “them” over there in “apostate Christianity”…. i see it more as the whole thing is gone bad and we must come out of it, as in, the “it” the “Thing”, and separate, in order to follow Jesus Christ and abide in Him. As in, “Come out of her, MY people.” It used to be the false teaching, false doctrines & teachers- was only out there in the pagan world, and we were “good & ok” in the Church. But I see it now as being the entire Church. So i am stepping out and away in order to not drown in this apostacy, in order to abide in Christ, and follow the Lamb wherever He goes. I so appreciate the fellowship with you and all the brethren in Christ! God bless you as you serve Him with all your might.

Bless you sister, I’m right there with you. I believe we won’t see a real collective body until things get real bad in our world. Then the church will arise. Those of his real true church, that is. Right now it’s prep time, and the body is fragmented in bits and pieces. The dross is being burned out, so the real gold can come forth.
    Thanks for your true comment!

[…] THE FALLLING AWAY (rjperalta) This posting identifies the apostasy that’s transpiring even as this is being written and read by others. We often think of this in futureistic terms, however, it’s been going on for quite a while. Without a doubt, the falling away is gaining momentum as the separating between the sheep and the goats becomes manifest. […]

How sad it is, each time we see the smoke rising from a darkened candle, whose flame once burned brightly . . .

So true. It’s a very sad sight to behold.
Thanks for stopping by. And may God bless you as you go out!
